Blizzcon 2016 highlights
Today is the first day of Blizzcon 2016: The 10th edition of Blizzard’s event, where they show off all kinds of new stuff for all of their games, from the good old Diablo to the newest one of the crowd, Overwatch. Here are the highlights of the main stage event:
Overwatch was the first game to get new content announced. They started by showing a video about the development of Overwatch, which got “hacked” by the new hero, Sombra. They then played Sombra’s animated short, called Infiltration, which is about Reaper, Widowmaker and Sombra invading Volskaya Industries. Watch the short below:
Attendees could try out this hero at the Blizzcon Main Stage. You can read more about her here.
New maps and a new gamemode
They also talked about a new map – Oasis. Oasis is a terraformed area in the Arabian desert. All we know at the moment is that it will be a King of the Hill map. Oasis hits PTR in December.
There’s also the Arcade – a feature with new gamemodes and exclusive maps (starting with Ecopoint Antarctica) which will be focused around 1v1 and 3v3. Brawls are also going to be moved to the Arcade. Players will receive special loot box rewards for playing this mode.
Personally, I’m very excited about all this new content, and can’t wait to get my hands on it. Both Sombra and the Arcade are hitting the PTR this coming Tuesday, which will also include the new single-hero limit on Quick Play. The “Old Quick Play” will be available in Arcade mode as “No Limits”.
- There will also be a new Genji skin, which will be rewarded to players who play 15 matches of the new HotS Brawl.
- The Overwatch eSports League has been officially announced!
- Contracts will be regulated like traditional sports, so players will have contracts, minimum salaries, benefits, and so on.
- The third and final set of Nova missions for StarCraft II are coming out on November 22.
- StarCraft II’s API will be opened up to AI researchers starting early next year.
Heroes of the Storm
A new Brawl was announced for Heroes of the Storm: Blackheart’s Revenge. This Brawl is different from the others because it features asymmetrical gameplay, where each team has their own win condition. Only one team has a core. One of the teams is on offense, whereas the other is on defense. Blackheart’s Revenge will be released on November 15.
Two new heroes were announced at the event: Varyan Wrynn and Ragnaros. Varian is a multi-class hero. Adaptable fighter as either a warrior or an assassin. He has 6 very different playstyles.
“A fallen warrior who recently made the ultimate sacrifice”
Varian releases at November 15, while Ragnaros releases later in December. Both were available for trying out at the event.
