Eurogamer is reporting this morning that Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon (which are on sale today for 3DS) will also be coming to the new Nintendo Switch.

Multiple sources tell Eurogamer the game is already well into development, will launch in 2017, and currently holds the codename of Pokémon Stars.

This would seem to be more of of a third version than a full release of Sun and Moon to the new system.

Nintendo WTF

This is classic nintendo behavior, when they have a major release like Sun/Moon, they will follow it up a few short months later with a third title, which often shares content with the first two. This was most notable done with Pokemon Yellow version, which released containing mostly the same content as the Red and Blue versions in the United States, but with just a little more.

This is however the first time we will see Nintendo making a similar game for diffrent systems, and I dont think its a large jump in logic to assume that the two systems will be able to communicate. I expect that we will see the ability to trade Pokemon back and forth across systems become standard as the Switch gets its own line up of Poke-centric games.

So when can I have it

Pokemon Sun and Moon are out today in North America and tomorrow in Europe, but this new game is anyones guess. With the Switch scheduled to release in March I would guess this game will come shortly after. This will be the first time that a Pokemon game has spanned consoles, and I for am quite eager to see it working

Euro gamers article also says

I’m told that GameFreak largely paused work on the Switch version a couple of months ago to polish Sun and Moon in time for their launch this month, but that work on Stars will now resume with the development of features not found in the 3DS versions.

Eurogamer is also confirmed (as I speculated) that the pokebank will allow for trading of pokemon across games and systems. Pokemon Stars will use the same map, routs, and Pokemon as Sun and Moon, but will feature a built from the ground up more 3D centric graphical engine when it releases.
