Russ Bullock, president of Piranha Games, made the announcement on stage at MechCon 2016. MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is slated for a tentative 2018 release.  During the announcement Piranha Games also released this Pre-Alpha Footage:

This is to be a fully singleplayer game.  Yes, you heard that correctly. We are finally getting another fully singleplayer MechWarrior game. So many games have gone to multiplayer that I’m really surprised by this announcement.  To see a first person shooter go singleplayer when everyone else is flooding the online multiplayer market is refreshing.

Details on the game and it’s development are a bit skimpy (and not the good kind).  We know that the game is being developed using the Unreal Engine 4. That it is being created by a completely different team then the one currently supporting their current multiplayer only game, MechWarrior Online.  We also know that the game will be a standalone singleplayer game. Other than that details… well their aren’t any.

For those of us not familiar with the MechWarrior Games:

MechWarrior games take place in what they call the BattleTech universe. We have colonized space and named the area surrounding Earth the Inner Sphere.  The governing body that once ruled this area has fallen and divided into five Successor States (aka Great Houses). These Successor States fight over control of the Inner Sphere.  Thus we are placed 150 years into the Third Succession War, in the year 3015. In MechWarrior 5 you are a rookie mercenary MechWarrior.

Looking Forward

I’m looking forward to hearing more from Piranha Games about this new MechWarrior.  However, I’m still skeptical at this point.  It is a long time from now until 2018 and a lot can happen. So stay tuned for more information.  We will be sure to keep you updated as we learn more.  In the mean time if you’d like to see Piranha Games’ announcement in original form you can find it here.
