Pylon: Rogue First impressions
Pylon: Rogue is an upcoming top view rogue lite being developed by Quantum Squid (@) I had the honor of trying Pylon out on Friday at PAX east. If I had to sum up Pylon in just a few words I’d have to describe it as what would happen if Diablo 3 Hardcore and Binding of Isaac had a forbidden love child.
For an indie game this rogue lite game looks gorgeous. It is all too common for games similar to this to take a more minimalist approach when it comes to graphics. It is needless to say that it was very refreshing to run around in a detailed environment.
Each area is split into sections by sealed off “rooms” in which you are forced to do battle against random assortments of various horrible creatures. New players tend to underestimate the smaller creatures. As such you might forget about a giant wasp while fighting a raptor. That is until said wasp does a suicidal dive at you.
One of the hardest things to pull off in a rogue lite is to avoid having a player feeling cheated in some way. Now, I got destroyed (utterly) and it wasn’t any sort of glorious heroic death mind you. I was mauled, by bees of all things. All because I mistimed a block, but I could instantly tell that I had died due to my own newbie-ness, my lack of skill if you will. The controls were crisp just in the hands of … someone incompetent.
Needless to say I am very excited to see what the future holds for Pylon: Rogue. As well as being excited for a chance to sit down and give this game a proper review once the release date becomes near. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this one.
