War Games is finally getting a video game, in story form
If you are around my age, you probably grew up watching 1980’s action and sci-fi movies. From Top-Gun to Ghost Busters the 80’s were a golden age of cinematic action. One such cold-war infused film was War Games (1983). The central premise of which was one of the first things that got me interested in computers and hacking. Until now no on has dared to try and bring that paragon of cinema in to the video game realm (despite video games being a major plot of the show). Today that changes with the announcement that EKO and METRO GOLDWYN MAYER will be partnering to crate a new series of interactive web episodes based on the show. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a War Games game, but EKO and MGM are instead billing it as an “interactive TV series”
The series will take fans to a world of Hacktivism, espionage, and terror. Series Director Sam Barlow is the same mind behind narrative video driven Her Story which won several awards. The new series will take place at the same time as the movie and feature the protagonist (a young woman) seeking justice for her family.
Viewers will follow Jess Nurse (“Scandal,” “Grace and Frankie”) as Kelly, an ex-military brat turned hacker activist, as she and a team of international hackers band together in an attempt to bring about peace. As events escalate, they may have done more harm than good. Viewers influence the story by switching between video feeds and the series “learns” from their choices, resulting in experiences that are unique and personal.
Thats quite a trailer! Hopefully the interactive experience stands up to the great standards that EKO and Sam Barlow are so well known for. #WarGames’ brings together a cast of talented newcomers, gripping narrative and seamless interactivity, giving the audience a deep personal stake in the story as it unfolds,” said Yoni Bloch, CEO of Eko. “The show ‘watches’ your actions, learns your preferences, and adapts intelligently. #WarGames is a perfect example of the types of stories Eko’s technology makes possible, and we’re thrilled to make the series available across multiple platforms so viewers can enjoy it wherever they are and at their own pace.”
