GDC is in full swing, and as promised Atari had a big announcement for its long time fans. The long rumored and previewed Atari box, finally emerged. Now called the ATARI VCS, Atari announced all the details at their panel at GDC. Also annouced were two controller proto-types, one joystick and one modern style controller. Both are accented to match the consoles classic looks.

Just look at those wood veneer bits accented with that neon orange. A masterfull blending of modern and classic looks. Hopefully there are modern specs to back up that pretty look. Atarai promised that though the box has classic lines and looks, it will have power enough to run both modern and classic games. However since no specs were revealed we will have to take the word of Atari on this one.

Atari Connected Devices chief operating officer Michael Arzt said today:

“Every person at Atari and every partner involved with the new platform is just as fanatical about the brand and its heritage as our biggest fans are. With the Atari VCS name, we know how important it is to get everything completely right, and that’s why we briefly paused an imminent launch late last year. It was a difficult decision with the countdown underway, but we weren’t willing to go forward with even one thing out of alignment. We hope that despite the delay, Atari’s fans appreciate our extreme attention to detail and are as excited about the Atari VCS as we are.”

In addition to unveiling the official name and logo, Atari will be shifting all branding and communications channels to reflect the Atari VCS name. Fans and followers can sign up for email alerts at and follow Atari on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.
