New manga is always fun, and VIZ is one of the worlds leaders in bringing manga over to the us. I feel like not a week goes by where I don’t get an email from VIZ’s  PR team telling me about new manga that they are bringing to the US. This week is no different with two new titles. First up, That Blue Sky Feeling an LGBT focused manga about cute boys. It’s heading to stores on August 7th (and also to VIZ.com of course). The second is Shortcake Cake. A book about an oblivious girl who moved in to a boarding house and is always falling in to romantic situations.

A shojo manga for the ages: Short Cake Cake

First up is A Short Cake Cake. A Manga about young love in the Shojo genre. I will admit that I am not a huge shojo fan, so this one probably wont grace my shelves but if your a fan of romance check this one out. Our main character Ten Serizawa has a two-hour commute through the mountains to high school every day. So she can’t spend much time hanging out with her friends in the afternoon. She decides to move into the local boardinghouse, where one of her friends and three other boys are living. Ten’s friends consider her to be as oblivious as a rock when it comes to noticing boys and falling in love, but will she be able to keep her calm and steady heart in her new living situation?

Nancy Thistlethwaite Senior Editor with VIZ media said:

“Still waters run deep in SHORTCAKE CAKE, a new series by suu Morishita, a popular team of creators in Japan. Engaging characters and cool art will take you on a surprisingly captivating romantic journey.”

SHORTCAKE CAKE was created by a manga duo known under the pseudonym, Suu Morishita. In 2010, they debuted with the one-shot, Anote Konote.”  Their other published works include Hibi Chouchou and Shortcake Cake. The series will be published in print under VIZ Media’s Shojo Beat imprint with an MSRP of $9.99 U.S. / $12.99 CAN. SHORTCAKE CAKE will also be available digitally on August 7th via viz.com and the VIZ Manga App, as well as from the Nook, Kobo, Kindle, iBooks, comiXology, and Google Play stores. Future volumes of the series will be published on a quarterly basis.

An LGBT focused Manga about love between boys: That Blue Sky Feeling

Also announced today was That Blue Sky Feeling. A coming of age story about love blossoming between two high school boys. Viz is playing up the LGBT feels in this one, but anyone who has been around the block will recognize this as a BL manga. So if BL is your chosen genre be sure not to miss That Blue Sky Feeling. The manga will debut on August 14th in print and of course on VIZ.com.

The new series, which is written by Okura and features artwork by Coma Hashii, is rated ‘T’ for Teens. The story of outgoing high school student named Noshiro. He suddenly finds himself drawn to Sanada, the school outcast, who is rumored to be gay. Rather than deter Noshiro, the rumor makes him even more determined to get close to Sanada, setting in motion a surprising tale of first love. The Blue Sky Feeling will be priced at $10.99 U.S. It will launch digitally on August 14th via viz.com and the VIZ Manga App. VIZ also plans to publish future volumes of the series in 2019.

Joel Enos, Editor said of the new series:

“THAT BLUE SKY FEELING is an honest teen drama that depicts that special kind of confusion that all kids, straight and LGBT alike, experience as they start to fall for friends and classmates in school. You can’t always foresee who you’re going to be attracted to. It should appeal to fans of YA and readers looking for a substantial story that addresses high school life and issues without embellishing or holding back.”
